Description

The combined Odeon and UCI cinemas business operates in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany and Austria. It is the largest cinema operator outside of North America and the leader in Europe.

Strategy

There were enormous synergies to be achieved from combining two such large cinema businesses. Terra Firma also planned to use this platform to take advantage of further industry consolidation that was expected to occur in the broader European cinema market.

UCI has become the leading exhibitor chain in Spain by purchasing the Warner Lusomundo Sogecable cinema chain as well as the AMC circuit in Spain and Portugal. It has also strengthened its position in the Italian market by acquiring three cinemas from Europlex and is now the market leader in Italy.

Odeon/UCI's roll-out of premium seating and enhanced beverage and food offerings in selected cinemas across the UK, Spain and Germany has resulted in increased revenues in the period since acquisition.
