Social Responsibility
Deutsche Annington
The DAIG Foundation was set up in 2000 with an endowment of around € 5m.
Since its creation in early 2001, Deutsche Annington has committed to tenant and employee protection provisions which include restrictions on rent increases and sales of properties as well as guaranteed maintenance expenditure. Deutsche Annington also works closely with stakeholders such as labour unions and tenants’ associations. Its reputation as a socially responsible landlord has led to Deutsche Annington receiving endorsements from the Transnet labour union and the German Minister for Family Affairs.
The DAIG Charitable Foundation was set up in 2000 with an endowment of around € 5m. It uses the interest from the capital to help DAIG tenants under a number of defined categories, including health and educational support.
The Viterra Foundation, a charitable foundation previously operated by Viterra, the E.On housing portfolio bought by DAIG in 2005, also makes charitable donations. Recent projects by the two Foundations include:
- Sponsorship of two ballooning courses in Gladbeck for thirty senior tenants in DAIG accommodation.
- Funding for a project for immigrant teenagers in Essen-Altendorf managing playgrounds and organising social events. Twelve youngsters between 12-16 took part in the project, from April-June 2008, which also provided anti-aggression classes and was designed to promote peaceful cooperation in the town.
- Renovation of the sand-and-mud area at the Protestant day-care centre in Bochum-Weimar.
- Rebuilding of Kids Club Erkarth-Hochdahl which had been completely destroyed by a fire in August 2007.
- Support to the Bernetal School in Essen for its arts project “The gate of learning (Das Tor des Lernens)”. Bernetal is a municipal school for handicapped children with a focus on emotional and social development.
- Sponsorship of a summerhouse and lawn for the Kinderladen day-care centre in Bochum. The institution takes care of 20 children from 3 to 6 years with the help of 4 nursery teachers.
- Contribution to the refurbishment of the outdoor playground at the Am Finkenhof day-care centre in Bonn. In early 2008 the kindergarten started together with parents, the project “Water Playground” in order to redesign and improve the outdoor playground.
