CPC
Description
Consolidated Pastoral Company (CPC) is Australia’s second largest beef producer with a current herd size of some 290,000 cattle. CPC’s operations include breeding and grass fattening cattle across its 15 properties, which are located in the northern part of Australia. It also breeds most of its own bulls. The properties together comprise 5 million hectares, which is around 0.7% of Australia’s land mass (or by way of comparison about 40% the size of England). CPC also has a 50% interest in a feedlot operation in Indonesia.
Strategy
The acquisition of CPC was driven by a number of recognised global macroeconomic themes, in particular global population growth, a shift in Asian diet towards higher protein consumption and limited supply of productive land.
Australia is attractive as a source of beef supply because of the quality and cost efficiency of its grass-fed cattle, and its ability to reliably supply large quantities of cattle into the Asian market.
Australia is also currently the only major disease-free beef exporter in the world, allowing it access to high value markets such as Japan and South Korea, which remain restricted to other international suppliers.
